Chapter Twenty-Five

Callie

After a couple hours of sheer joy brought on by galloping around the pasture with happy horses and an ecstatic kid, as well as the delightfully unexpected company of some of the tiny spirits dancing in our wake, I had enough of an empathetic charge to put an entire DMV office in a good mood.

My skin itched at the over full sensation, so once I untacked Achoti and got Jillian situated cleaning stalls, I headed for the main corral to visit the herd. Some were saddled in preparation of riders for the next session, but all were loose, eating or hanging out in small social groups. Several looked up as I walked through the gate. Pride actually strode forward to meet me, only the faintest of stiffness in his gait.

I greeted him first, offering him a thread of connection before I touched. He slid under my hands, his consciousness welcoming me as our heart beats came into coherence. All his little aches and pains came into focus, and while I couldn’t heal them, I could give them energy. One by one, I placed my hands over the spots, and imagined a bubble of warm light swaddling each, soothing the tension away. He sighed as I worked, then licked and chewed and yawned to release the mental energy he’d been expending in living with the pains. None had been enough to keep him from being ridden or wanting to do his perceived job, but they did sure make a fella a little more tired at the end of the day.

Once he was settled, I turned and found several other horses waiting for my attention. Not a shock, that. When horses knew you could be relied upon to listen, they would often come to you when they needed something.

In this case, it was a myriad of discomforts, all of which I mentally catalogued as I worked. Some things I could help more than others, but some things might need medical attention if they persisted. Like the chestnut mare who hated to be followed closely on the trail that showed me a discomfort in her flanks and low back that made my own body twinge in sympathy. Hormones were an absolute pain, and while I was grateful for my implant that made the impact on my body much less than it had been, I knew what it felt like to be in debilitating pain that you were expected to work through.

She flinched as I slid my hands along her muscular loin, then relaxed as the warm light got to work on the tension there. As if I had all day for her alone, I breathed through her pain, encouraging it to leave with every exhale.

Before long, she was content with the improvement, and even more grateful when I sent her a picture of her saddle being pulled off. No horse would ever be asked to work if they weren’t feeling up to it.

Over and over, I helped with tiny things from a rock in a hoof to ears itching from fly bites, those things addressed more simply.
